Central America’s Unresolved Migrant Crisis

Central AmericaBasically, what you need to know about migration from Central America is this: it is not declining.  Central Americans are continuing to make the perilous and treacherous journey north in hopes of finding freedom from gang violence, poverty, and fear.

Why do reports then show that the numbers of Central Americans being detained at our southern border are dropping, much lower than last year? The answer is this: the United States has put serious pressure on the Mexican authorities to apprehend the Central Americans before they make it to the U.S. 

Mexico is apprehending and either detaining or sending back thousands more migrants than they have in the past.

“The root causes of migration haven”t gone away,” said Maureen Meyer, an expert on migration trends.
