Supervising Attorney, Desireé Hernández, and Justice AmeriCorps Fellow, Luisa Lebron, attended the press conference where New York State Office for New Americans, Immigrant Advocates, and Philanthropic Organizations announced a public-private partnership to increase community services for Central American children who recently arrived in Long Island. “Children arriving on Long Island from El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala are fleeing violence that is unimaginable for most Americans and are reuniting with family members who are already here,” said Sandra Dunn, Program Director of Hagedorn Foundation.  This funding will increase the children’s access to much needed services, including attorneys and support for the children and their families in their local communities. Thanks to this partnership, Safe Passage received a generation contribution, which will allow the Justice AmeriCorps Fellows to directly represent children in family court and immigration court proceedings.
