El Salvador’s ‘Most Violent Month’: Homicide Rate Hits Record High in May

In the month of May, there were 635 murders in El Salvador, almost 20 murders per day.  That is the highest homicide rate the nation has seen since it’s civil war ended in 1992.  60% of the victims were criminals who were either killed by rival gangs, or by their fellow gang members, saidThe national police director, Mauricio Ramírez Landaverde.

Prior to May, March had the highest murder rate in the past decade with about 15 murders per day for a total of 481.
