Safe Passage Mentor Attorney, Rex Chen

In June 2015, Safe Passage Project Mentor Attorney, Rex Chen led a panel discussion at the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) conference in the DC area to help hundreds of lawyers with strategies to defend unaccompanied children in immigration court.  The panel shared case stories of numerous victories in immigration courts across the United States where the government did not properly serve the Notice to Appear or violated their regulations by not advising children of their basic rights.  Rex described the legal standard and gave examples for arguing that the government’s misconduct justifies terminating the case in immigration court.

Rex spoke with three other panelists: Kristin Jackson of Public Counsel in Los Angeles, Michelle Mendez of Catholic Legal Immigration Network in the DC area, and Kristin Macleod-Ball of the American Immigration Council in DC.  They also wrote a practice pointer about the topic for AILA.
