Safe Passage Welcomes New York Law School Students and Prospective Legal Interns

Safe Passage, August 20, 2015

On August 18, 2015, Safe Passage Project participated in New York Law School’s Law School Spotlight, where various clinics and faculty staffed information tables to inform new law students of the many opportunities that are available at the law school.

Lenni Benson (Director and NYLS Professor of Law), Claire Thomas(Director of Training and NYLS Adjunct Faculty) Juan Chiquillo(Safe Passage Graduate Fellow and NYLS Class of 2015), Luisa Lebron( Safe Passage Justice Americoorps Fellow and NYLS Class of 2015) and Rex Chen (Safe Passage Mentor Attorney), explained how law students volunteering with Safe Passage have an opportunity to visit and observe court proceedings, receive in-depth training in immigration law, help our team weekly in immigration court, work directly with clients, and conduct legal research.

Many NYLS students attended, signed up, and expressed interest in our team’s work to help unaccompanied children who do not have lawyers prove that they qualify for protection from deportation.  We are still accepting applications for internships and look forward to a great group of legal interns and volunteers this fall.
