Representing Immigrant Children: One Year Later

SPP LogoThe Safe Passage Project is planning two free programs exploring the impact of the recent arrivals from Central America.

Thousands of Central American children and young parents with infants arrived in New York in the past year.  From 4 pm to 6 pm, this panel will address unmet needs of this population including, lack of representation in court, asylum deadlines, and access to appropriate education and stable home environment.

Susan Kingsland, Social Worker, Immigrant Youth Representation Project, Legal Aid Society and Samantha Norris Social Worker, Safe Passage Project at New York Law School

Veyom Bahl, Program Officer, Robin Hood Foundation (invited)

Moderated by Professor Lenni B. Benson, Director, Safe Passage Project

The event is free and open to the public.

Coffee reception to follow before an evening program in the auditorium.

Beginning at 6:30 PM, join Safe Passage Project to hear adjudicators and judges discuss best practices on representing unaccompanied minors before the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and Immigration Court. Opening Remarks will be given by Speaker of the New York City Council, Melissa Mark-Viverito.
Panelists include: Immigration Judges Patricia A. Rohan and Mary Cheng (New York Immigration Court); U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Field Office Director Timothy J. Houghton and Adjustment of Status Section Chief Kristian Parker; Professor Theo Liebmann of Hofstra Law School; and Safe Passage Project Director of Training, Claire R. Thomas. Moderated by Professor Lenni Benson, Director of the Safe Passage Project. 

The event is free and open to the public. No CLE credit provided.
